Pursuing Excellence

MAINTAINING GOOD BEHAVIOUR

The school sets out to create a caring atmosphere where children are encouraged to develop their natural talents and abilities. High standards of behaviour and respect for others are expected.

The agreed system for managing pupils’ behaviour is based on a clear and simple set of rules, rewards and consequences. It is based on the premise that each child accepts responsibility for their own behavioural choices. Our role as parents and adults within AMS is to work together to help children make the right choices about their behaviour.

The agreed rules, rewards and consequences (communicated to the child) are:

Rules:

  1. Attention of all is invited to the following aspects, failing which strict disciplinary action shall be taken against the defaulters.
  2. Disobedience or disrespect of his/her seniors or members of the staff. A student is expected to stand up and wish the teacher when they approach him/ her.
  3. Using or trying to use unfair means in the examination. The entire examination of such a student may be cancelled.
  4. Use of abusive language and indecent behaviour.
  5. Acts of immorality or possession of undesirable literature.
  6. Theft or wilful damage to the school/ college property, or others’ belongings.
  7. Disinterestedness in studies, as seen from the examination/ class test results or reported by members of the staff, concerned. A student, who fails twice in the final examination(s) during his stay in the school/ college, shall not be retained in the institution under any circumstances.
  8. Habitual absence from the school/ college.
  9. Breaking of school bounds and leaving the school premises without permission.
  10. Use or possession of cigarettes, snuff, or any other narcotics.
  11. Possession of any firearm, or sharp-edged weapon.
  12. Parents’/Guardians’ non-cooperation with school staff/ Principal or their indecent/ unbecoming behaviour using abusive language etc.
  13. Communicating or associating with anti-social elements outside the school or students expelled/rusticated from the school on any of the above grounds.
  14. Any other act of ill-discipline that the Principal feels, cannot be condoned.
  15. The Principal has the authority to expel a student from the school/ college without assigning any reason. The Principal’s decision in all academic/ disciplinary matters will be final and binding on the students and their parents (as well as the Staff). It will NOT be challengeable in any court of law.

Rewards:

  1. Verbal praise.
  2. Points towards negotiated class treat, e.g., golden time, longer playtime.
  3. Points are usually given as stars on a class chart. It is important to recognize that individual pupils can contribute to an overall class reward.
  4. Individual certificates.
  5. Sent to Vice Principal.
  6. Sent to Principal.
  7. Phone call to parents.
  8. Appreciation Letter to parents.

Consequences:

  1. Warning.
  2. Stay 1 minute at the end of class.
  3. Stay 3 minutes at the end of class.
  4. Time at break/lunch time to have a discussion with the class teacher.
  5. Phone call to parents.
  6. Letter to parents.
  7. Sent to Principal.
  8. Sent to Vice Principal.

The above system of agreed rules, rewards and consequences works well for the vast majority of children at AMS. In each class, there are a few children for whom the system does not work so well and who need a more individual system of agreed rewards and consequences. These are set up by the class teacher in collaboration with the child, parents, School Disciplinary Committee.
